About Tozan

Tozan is a sacred pilgrimage to Taisekiji, the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, located at the foot of the majestic Mt. Fuji in Japan.

The word "Tozan" literally means "climbing the mountain," symbolizing both the physical journey to the temple and the spiritual ascent toward enlightenment. This pilgrimage represents one of the most significant practices in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, offering believers the opportunity to worship before the Dai-Gohonzon and receive guidance at the Head Temple.

For practitioners of Nichiren Shoshu, Tozan is more than just a visit—it is a profound spiritual experience that strengthens faith, deepens understanding of Buddhist teachings, and connects believers with the lineage of Nichiren Daishonin. The pilgrimage includes participation in ceremonies, receiving teachings from the High Priest, and experiencing the serene beauty of the temple grounds.

Our November 2025 group pilgrimage brings together members from around the world to share in this transformative experience, creating lasting bonds of friendship and mutual encouragement in faith.

Taisekiji & Dai-Gohonzon

The Head Temple - Taisekiji

Taisekiji, meaning "Temple of the Essential Teaching of the Great Jewel," is the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the temple was founded in 1290 by Nikko Shonin, one of the six senior priests designated by Nichiren Daishonin.

The temple complex spans a vast area and includes numerous buildings of historical and religious significance, including the Hoando (Treasure Hall), the Mutsubo (Six Priests' Hall), and the magnificent Sho-Hondo. The serene grounds, surrounded by natural beauty and with views of Mt. Fuji, provide an atmosphere conducive to spiritual reflection and practice.

The Dai-Gohonzon

The Dai-Gohonzon is the supreme object of worship in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism.

Inscribed by Nichiren Daishonin on October 12, 1279, the Dai-Gohonzon embodies the enlightenment of the Buddha and serves as the foundation for the faith and practice of all Nichiren Shoshu believers. It is enshrined at Taisekiji and represents the ultimate purpose of Buddhist practice—the attainment of Buddhahood in this lifetime.

The Dai-Gohonzon was inscribed specifically for the happiness and enlightenment of all humanity throughout the Latter Day of the Law. Worshipping before the Dai-Gohonzon during Tozan is considered the highest form of Buddhist practice, allowing believers to connect directly with the life force of the Buddha and receive immeasurable benefit.

Buddhist Practice & Understanding

Juzu Beads (Prayer Beads)

What is Juzu beads?

Juzu beads is an important tool for Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist. 26th high priest Nichikan Shonin wrote in his treatise, "The Three Robes of This School": "The prayer beads are the Buddhist implement that helps common mortals advance in their Buddhist practice."

Father Bead

Father beads means to sever/cut our earthly desires.

2 strands of 10 beads each represent the Ten Worlds. Tear-shape bead represents a Pot that store virtues. The tassel is to stop the pollution of the *Ten Worlds.

*Ten worlds are in the order of condition:

  1. Hell
  2. Hunger
  3. Animality
  4. Anger
  5. Humanity
  6. Rapture
  7. Learning
  8. Realization
  9. Bodhisattva
  10. Buddhahood

They are: 1. Hell, 2. Hunger, 3. Animality, 4. Anger, 5. Humanity, 6. Rapture, 7. Learning, 8. Realization, 9. Bodhisattva, and 10. Buddhahood. The ten worlds possesses the ten worlds. Which enable He condition of hell to attain enlightenment since it also possesses 10 worlds including Buddhahood.

Mother Bead

Mother beads means to create good causes.

2 strands of 5 beads each represent the *Ten Factors.

*Ten Factors:

Ten Factors are Ten kinds of aspects that function as specific activities of life. "Factor" refers to things and events as they are, and it also represents the truth of the middle way. This principle is elucidated in the Expedient Means (Hoben; second) chapter of the Lotus Sutra.

Ten factors are:

  1. Appearance
  2. Nature
  3. Entity
  4. Power
  5. Influence
  6. Internal cause
  7. Relation
  8. Latent effect
  9. Manifest Effect
  10. Consistency from Beginning to End
Kyo = Sutra

Kyo(経) = in Sanskrit, is "sutra," and originally meant "thread" or "connection."

String that links all the Mother bead, Father bead, 108 and 4 bodhisattvas beads together, its like putting all Buddhist sutras together.

Kyo in the phrase "経" means "経" or "糸", which connects all 108 and 4 bodhisattvas beads together, like putting all Buddhist sutras together.

Myoho - Renge - Kyo
Myoho

(Mystic Law)

Renge

(Oneness of cause & effect)

Kyo

(String up all Buddhist sutras together)

To summarize, Juzu beads represent the five characters of Myoho-Renge-Kyo. These beads are the Mystic Law symbolize the Gohonzon, and as we are taught in the Gosho (Writings of Nichiren Daishonin), the True Buddha. Because of their profound significance, you must treat your prayer beads with respect, just as you would to the Buddha. To understand the meaning of the beads is to begin to understand the profundity of Buddhism, the correct practice, and the reason for expressing gratitude to the Three Great Secret Laws.

Renge (蓮華) - 108 + 4 Small Beads

108 beads represent our 108 earthly desires

4 small beads are "Four bodhisattvas": Jogyo(Tranquility), Muhengyo(Eternity), Jyogyo(Purity), and Anryugyo(True Self)

This when we hold our Juzu and chant sincere Daimoku, we can change our 108 earthly desires through the virtues of the Four Bodhisattvas.

*Four Bodhisattvas: The Four Bodhisattvas, The Bodhisattva of the Earth described in the Lotus Sutra, who will propagate the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law.

Oneness of Cause and Effect

Lotus Flower produces

Flower (Cause)
Fruit (Effect)

The 108+4 beads signify the oneness of cause and effect (represented by Renge) which represents the lotus flower because lotus is the only one that bears fruit and flowers at the same time. Normally will have flowers first, then change to fruit after pollination.

26th High Priest Nichikan Shonin stated: the flower represents cause and the fruit represents effect. The lotus flower alone produces the flower and the fruit simultaneously— which also means the cause and the effect happen at the same time and its delicate and pure. (It is therefore comparable to the mystic law)

How to Overcome Problems with Faith

Why do we face problems?

As long as we are living in this world, we will definitely face difficulties or sufferings. But many people do not know the reason behind this. Many people think that they are very unlucky, which is why they run into problems all the time.

So why do we face problems? Buddhism teaches the concept of Karma as the answer. We face problems because we created negative karma.

What is Karma?

Karma signifies the actions that potentially affect the future. For example, if you help those in need, you'll be helped when you are in need. There is always an effect caused by an action, hence the concept of Karma is universal, it is independent of what one's religion is, and is in accordance with the law of cause and effect.

Three Categories of Action

All of our actions can be classified into only three types, which are Thoughts, Words, and Deeds. These are called the Three Categories of Actions.

Mental Acts (Thoughts)

The thoughts that arise in the mind become the karma of the mind

Verbal Acts (Words)

When they manifest as words, they become karma of the mouth

Physical Acts (Deeds)

When these thoughts manifest as physical actions, they become the karma of the body

That is why it's important to have the correct thoughts to bring up the correct words and correct deeds.

Three Evil Thoughts

Buddhism teaches the Ten Evil Acts which describe 10 kinds of negative karma in our three categories of actions: thoughts, words and deeds. Here, we will just introduce you to the three negative karma of the thoughts from the Ten Evil Acts.

1. Anger

Clouds our rational judgement and because of that we are unable to reflect on our actions, we resort to blaming our circumstances and people around us for the cause of our problems

2. Greed

"The earth has everything for human needs but nothing for his greed". Human greed is insatiable. People who are greedy will always desire something more and never be satisfied with what they have

3. Stupidity

It is used to describe someone that is very stubborn and refuses to accept anything that contradicts his/her world view. In Buddhism, we view as someone who rejects the true teaching, not following the law of cause and effect

Changing Poison into Medicine

According to the guidance, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo is the great medicine that can change your negative cycle of karma.

When your life is improved, the way of thinking and the words are also improved. Then when your behavior improves, your life and human relationships improve. If you practice this Buddhism, you can obtain true happiness and you experience that your life is purified and filled with vitality.

Three Ways to Practice:
To Practice

Changing life into medicine

Lessening of Karmic Retribution

Lessening our karmic retribution

To Change Your Action

Change present action and future actions towards right karma

Lessening our Karmic Retribution

"Doctrine of Lessening one's Karmic Retribution"

If one's heavy karma from the past is not expiated within this lifetime, one must undergo the sufferings of hell in the future, but if the experiences extreme hardship in this life, the sufferings of hell will vanish instantly. (Gosho p. 486)

When you clean a dirty pot with water, first, the water gets dirty, but by repeatedly spraying it with clean water, the pot will eventually be clear. Like that, in order to clean our negative karma, we will face negative effects which are the right way. For example, if you are facing a problem related to your job, it's still a problem, but it is less severe than it could have been. We can appreciate our problem by taking it as a chance to lessen our karmic retribution.

Decide on Your Karma and Not Let It Decide You
Karma Decision Flowchart
Steps to Overcome Karma:
  1. Accept that this is our karma - First you should know and accept your karma. If you know your karma, you can get a clue to change your actions. If you could see your karma, you need to accept that you made this negative karma in your past lifetime.
  2. Strive to change our immediate action (Present) - So how do we change that karma? First, you can change your present actions by choosing not to make negative karma and to make positive karma based on your karma. We tend to behave based on our karma. So, be aware of our tendencies, then
  3. Keep practicing - Keep practicing to change the past negative karma
  4. Appreciate - Appreciate the lessening of karmic retribution

Remember: Karma will change in the best possible way! Should I chant/practice more? Should I change my actions? Am I able to accept my problem?

Three Existences of Past, Present, and Future

Buddhism teaches that your life exists throughout the Three Existences of Past, Present, and Future. This means you had your past life before you were born, and there is a future life after you die. So, a past lifetime's karma can appear in this present lifetime or future lifetime.

Past

Present

Vis-à-vis

Future

Fatalism

Is Karma a Fatalism? Since you now learn that Karma can go round the three paths of past, present and future, you may think that karma is like fatalism.

Definition of Fatalism: The belief that all events are predetermined and therefore inevitable. That is, we should accept it's nonsense to change our karma if an event is predetermined. However, this is not fatalism. Because we can change our Karma!

Pilgrimage Details

Preface

Tozan literally means "to climb the mountain." In our practice, it means the pilgrimage to Japan, to worship the Dai-Gohonzon. Taisekiji is a vast, beautiful area with many temple buildings amid forests, rushing mountain water and ancient stone paths, steeped in the heritage of six or seven hundred years. Tozan is a pilgrimage made to Taisekiji, single-mindedly yearning to see the Dai Gohonzon of high sanctuary and present High Priest NichinyoShonin, who is the legitimate successor to NichirenDaishonin. Also we can pay our heartfelt gratitude of thanks for the Gohonzonsma for all the benefit we receive by practicing True Law. Taisekiji is the spiritual destination where Three Grate Secret Laws dwell.

The 26th High Priest NichikanShonin mentioned its immeasurable benefits: "ThisGohonzon bestows limitless, infinite benefits, and its unfathomable workings are vastly profound. Therefore, if you chant 'Nam Myoho Renge Kyo' with faith in this Gohonzon for even a short while, there is no prayer that will not be answered, no evil that not be eradicated, no blessing that will not be bestowed, and no reason that will not become clear"

Intention on going on Tozan must be very pure. At any time you should not have a shake mind. Throughout from the start to end you should have a seeking mind with high sprit.

During True Buddha, NichirenDaishonin's time many believers came to see him from far distance. During that time travelling was very difficult. But they came to see him with Gokuyo and food items. They came by foot. Two good examples are Abutsubo going to see NichirenDaishonin when Abutsubo was 90 yearsold in 1278 from Sado to Mt. Minobu. Second is Nichimyo-ama going to see NichirenDaishonin with her infant baby Otogozewhen NichirenDaishonin was in Sado from kamakura. It was a very difficult travel, where she had to overcome lot of difficulties. Once she had to cross the
